ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dr. Antti Ohenoja is a Finnish percussionist and timpanist whose career spans Europe, Asia, and North America as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician and pedagogue.
He holds a Doctor of Music degree from the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Prior to his doctoral studies, he earned a Master of Music degree from the Sibelius Academy and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto, where he studied under distinguished percussionists including Russell Hartenberger, Bob Becker, Beverley Johnston, Robin Engelman, and John Rudolph. He has also studied privately with the marimba gurus Gordon Stout and Eric Sammut.
Following a three-year tenure as Section Principal Percussionist and acting section principal percussionist of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Dr. Ohenoja was appointed principal percussionist on contract for the autumn season 2025 with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in Sweden.
His orchestral career has also included appearances with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, among others. He currently maintains an active international career as a freelance orchestral and chamber musician.
As a chamber musician, he was a founding member of the Oulu Percussion Group in Finland. His collaborations with the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra have taken him on extensive tours throughout the United States and Europe, including performances at Carnegie Hall and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. Further, in early 2025, Antti made his Suntory Hall debut in Tokyo with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.
In addition to his performance career, Dr. Ohenoja previously held a full-time teaching position at the Lappeenranta Institute of Music in Finland and has presented clinics and masterclasses in Malaysia, Canada, South Korea, Finland, and Lithuania. He has also served as percussion instructor for the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
Outside of music, he is an avid chess player, gym goer, and a long distance runner, balancing his artistry with a strong commitment to self-development.
