ABOUT THE ARTIST
Tsagkarakis Gerasimos is currently a percussionist of the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, Jiangsu Province, China. He served as the Associate Principal Percussionist of the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, Guizhou Province, China from 2015-2018.
Gerasimos has collaborated with the Athens State Orchestra, the Hellenic Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Novosibirsk City Orchestra, the Macao Symphony Orchestra, the Qatar Philharmonic and the Greek National Opera. As a member of the Greek percussion ensemble TYPANA he collaborated with the Ballet of the City of Zurich and the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia, having appeared, among others, at the Gymnastics Gala of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004 and the Hellenic Festival of Athens.
He has performed under the baton of such conductors as Teodor Currentzis, Kamal Khan, Rico Saccani, John Axelrod, Jean -Francois Heisser, Tan Dun, Xu Zhong, Dimitri Kitajenko, Li Biao, Joshua Kangming Tan, Gyoyong Zhang, Daniel Oren, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Tito Muñoz, Adrian Prabava, Chen Xieyang, James Judd, Dane Lam, Thomas Rösner and others.
He was named the winner of the Advanced Category of Snare drum in the competition of the International Percussion Festival (Montebello della Battaglia, Italy, July 2015, 1st Absolute Prize) as well as the International Snare drum Competition organized by the ITALY P.A.S. in Pescara, Italy in 2014 (3rd Prize, Advanced Category).
A native of Corfu, Greece, an island with a long music tradition, Gerasimos made his first musical steps at the Philharmonic Society of Corfu (the oldest wind band in Greece) and received his Diploma in Percussion from the Athenaeum Conservatory of Athens (Prof. Dimitrios Desyllas). Being granted with scholarships by the “Alexander S. Onassis Foundation”, continued his studies in solo performance with Prof. Markus Leoson at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Weimar, Germany (2011-2012) and Prof. Edoardo Albino Giachino in Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Associazione Culturale Archangelo Corelli in Rome, Italy (2012-2014) focusing on orchestral repertoire. He has attended masterclasses with Mike Quinn, Stephan Fougeroux, Tim Adams, Jonathan Haas, Wieland Welzel, J.B. Leclere, John Beck, She-e-Wu,Pius Cheung, Casey Cangelosi and others.
He has also a Bachelor’s Degree in English Language and Literature (National Kapodistrian University of Athens) as well as a Master’s Degree in Translation and Interpretation (Ionian University, Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation) and he is the author of the “DICTIONARY OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS : Playing Techniques - Mallets / Sticks - Categories of Instruments - Effects, An in - depth Acquaintance with the World of Percussion, (includes terminology in English, French, Italian, German, Greek, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese) which has been already published in Greek and is currently being revised in order to be out in its English version.
